Is it Time to Consider a Divorce?

Is it Time to Consider a Divorce?

While couples shouldn’t balk at the first sign of trouble, it’s important to remember that your marriage shouldn’t feel like a constant battle. Divorce can be a difficult thing to go through, and it is not a decision to be taken lightly. However, if the following points sound familiar to you, perhaps it is time to consider exploring this option to move forward and be happier in life.

The Trust is Broken

Any relationship needs to have a solid foundation of trust for it to work, and once the trust is gone it can be hard to get it back. There are many reasons why you might lose trust in your partner, for instance infidelity, hiding financial matters, hiding addiction, or even sharing secrets you told them. If you are always feeling as though your partner is lying to you or feel like you can’t trust them in other ways, it can be incredibly detrimental to your mental and emotional health, and it isn’t a healthy relationship.

They Are Failing to Meet Your Needs

It’s important to note that relationships are a 2-way street, and it should always be an equal amount of giving and taking. That being said, it isn’t uncommon for one person to push their needs aside to accommodate the needs of their partner, perhaps in the hopes that they will return the favor. If you are constantly pushing your needs aside to make your partner happy, or they are failing to meet your needs for some other reason, this is likely to become unbearable and make you miserable in life.

All Attempts to Resolve Your Issues Have Not Worked

Of course, divorce should be a last resort as ending your marriage is a big deal. All couples face trials and tribulations in their relationships, but if they work together a lot of these issues can be resolved as a team through open communication and an effort to understand each other. If you are having problems that seem hard to solve together, think about seeing a couple’s therapist as you might both feel more confident speaking up about your concerns, and having someone meditating can help you see things from a different perspective. However, if all of your attempts to resolve your issues have not worked, and you have finally had enough, it could be time to look up family law solicitors.

You Feel Under Threat

Finally, the most important reason to get a divorce is if you are feeling under threat from your spouse. Abuse comes in many forms, and this might be verbal/emotional abuse, physical/sexual abuse, or mental abuse as the most common. It is never as simple as packing a bag and leaving, so if you are starting to fear for your well-being, reach out to loved ones, even if your partner has isolated them from you. They love you and will want to make sure that you are safe and help you. If you feel like there is no one close to you to turn to, reach out to domestic abuse services and ask for their help too. When you are somewhere safe and feel ready, you can start putting your divorce into motion.

It’s never easy to face the end of a relationship, let alone a marriage, but if any of the above sound familiar to you and you’re not happy, it might be time to accept that things aren’t working and move on.
