The DIY Jobs You Can Try

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘don’t try this at home,’ yet there are a lot of DIY projects that novices can do successfully. Of course, many tasks are better left to the experts. However, if you enjoy a challenge and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, here are some DIY tasks you can try at home, and the results should be positive ones.

Putting Up Shelves

Shelving can become a very important part of any home design because it helps to keep your home tidy and clutter-free (although you might still need something of a clear-out to ensure you don’t have too many things lying around).

Putting up shelves is something that anyone can do, although it might take an extra set of hands if it’s a larger shelf, as someone will need to hold it in place and someone else will need to screw the brackets into the wall. You’ll also need a spirit level to ensure the shelves are straight. Otherwise, not only will they look strange, but they will have the potential to cause all your precious things to fall to the floor, which would be disastrous. It’s also a good idea to thoroughly check the area you want to put the shelves up in and to make sure you’re not going to drill into any live wires or water pipes.

Basic Plumbing

While it’s best to leave more complex plumbing work to the professionals, many jobs, such as replacing a tap, or understanding common boiler pressure issues, can be done on your own with the help of online resources like how-to articles and instructional videos. Before beginning any kind of repair, give it some serious thought and make sure you’re confident that it’s something a beginner could handle.

The problem with plumbing is that if you make a mistake, you could cause a lot of damage to your home. Water damage not only destroys furniture and possessions but can lead to mold and mildew as well. The key is to go slowly and remember all the steps you have to take, like turning off the water before you do any work.

Painting Walls

Do you feel like making some changes to your bedroom or living room? Have you chosen to give your home a facelift since the white paint is starting to look dingy? Changing the paint on your walls is a cheap and easy method to give your home a makeover and experiment with current design trends. The good news is that you can easily complete this task on your own.
Roll on the paint for big areas and use a brush for corners and hard-to-reach places, such as the spaces behind light switches, electrical outlets, and door and window frames. Protect the furniture with dust covers and mask off areas to avoid paint spills before painting. The first coat must dry completely before the second can be applied, and it’s useful to know that covering bright or dark colors with lighter ones may require multiple coats. Once you know all this, the painting part becomes much simpler.
